"Mother Night" is a song by The Relationship, written by Savic Enn and Brian Bell. It is the fourth track on the band's self-titled debut album.

Overview

"Mother Night" was one of the first Relationship songs heard by fans, originally released by Bell on the band's MySpace page. Like many of the songs the band would eventually release on their debut, the song underwent re-imaginings. The first features an acoustic drum recording, vocal percussion effects, and a synth string arrangement. Its chorus also includes a call-and-response backing vocal which would eventually be dropped. The second arrangement is quite different, as it is piano-driven and much more stripped down.

Live performances

Although the song's live debut isn't known, it was likely performed live for the first time in the late 2000's, possibly when the band opened on a handful of Weezer's Troublemaker Tour dates. It was performed live during Relationship's set on the 2014 Weezer Cruise, and has been performed solo by Bell a handful of times.

Reception

"Mother Night" is one of Bell's most well-regarded compositions. The piano demo was especially favored in Weezer fan circles.

Lyrics

Somewhere between the sunset and dawn
Where the angry glare of day is dead and gone
When most start sleeping
She comes creeping with the silence of alley cats

None other than the mother of dreams
So beautiful and dark in her majesty
She draws you near her magic mirror
Filled with silver-lined silhouettes

The stars that burn infernally
Shine on nocturnally finer things, yeah
So beautiful is the sight
So beautiful her garden of dark delights
So beautiful in lunar light - love you mother night

And with a little help from my mom
Who covers restless lovers with shadows calm
I'll hold you tightly
Love you rightly under hovering summer stars

I'm just a lunatic - a mad balladeer
I'll love you darkly but have no fear
Do not be frightened
We've got moonlight to brighten our lonely hearts

The stars that burn infernally
Shine on nocturnally finer things, yeah
So beautiful is this site
So beautiful her garden of dark delights
So beautiful in lunar light - love you mother night

So beautiful is this site
So beautiful her garden of dark delights
So beautiful in lunar light - love you mother night

So beautiful in lunar light
So beautiful in lunar light
So beautiful - love you mother night
