Overview

Cuomo mentioned the song title "Dorothy" in an edit on his wiki, Riverpedia, on February 16, 2021, indicating that it was planned for the summer-themed segment of Weezer's forthcoming 2022 album project, SZNZ. Said Cuomo, "Aww yeah jake loves dorothy from summer"

Rivers Cuomo first confirmed the song title "Portia" on his Discord server on June 13, 2022 after a clip of the song was discovered by fans in the source code for Cuomo's web game Weezle, as one of several planned teasers for SZNZ: Summer. "Portia" was confirmed to be a reworking of "Dorothy" when a demo of the latter was leaked online on December 25, 2022. Weeks before the song officially released, a snippet of the song leaked online featuring alternate chorus lyrics from the final version.
