Overview
'“Smart Girls” — the song was originally “Hot Girls,” about how frustrating it is to have all these amazingly hot girls tweeting at me and it just felt so frustrating because I’m not in that life stage anymore where I can do anything about it. So I wrote this song “Hot Girls.” It ultimately ended up feeling — I don’t know, too macho or something? So we just changed it to “Smart Girls” and every other lyric stayed the same, like a really cheesy song about girls. But just changing that one word makes it really different and interesting.

Songwriter Rivers Cuomo, for a period, used Twitter to compile random thoughts that would come to mind. One such thought, "Where did all these hot girls come from," was later utilized as a song lyric. "That was a tweet," Cuomo told Huck Magazine in a 2011 interview, "I didn't give any context for it, but I was talking about girls tweeting at me - where were they when I was single?" "Smart Girls" was co-written by Cuomo with musicians Tony Kanal (of No Doubt) and Jimmy Harry (who also contributed additional guitar work to the song).
The original "Hot Girls" demo was released as part of the digital compilation Alone X: The Red-Raditude-Hurley Years in 2020.
Though "Smart Girls" was never released as a single and has never been performed live, it has been covered on multiple television programs. In 2019, the band The Roots performed a brief rendition on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to introduce guest Beanie Feldstein.[2] The eighth episode of the second season of the TV series Evil features children singing the song.

Lyrics
Where did all these smart girls come from?
I don't think that I could choose just one
Where did all these smart girls come from?
Someone tell me how to get me some
On the floor, in a car
On the seat at the bar
Wherever I go
That's where they are
Smart girls
Never get enough of those
Smart girls
Smart girls
I want to be a bad boy right now
Real me is dying to hang out
I know you know what I'm talking about
I've got a feeling you could show me how
On a bus, on the train
On a boat, on the plane
I'm falling in love
What was your name?
Smart girls
Never get enough of those
Smart girls
Sleeping in the buff
Yumi, Sherie, Alison, Mary
Which one do I want to marry?
They’re all smart girls
They’re all smart girls
Sheena, Lola, Fabiola,
Don’t you know you make me lose my mind?
Where did all these smart girls come from?
I don't think that I could choose just one
Where did all these smart girls come from?
Someone tell me how to get me some
Lisa, Brittany, Paula, Whitney
Which one do I want here with me?
They're all smart girls
They're all smart girls
Debbie, Donna, Tatiana
Don't you know you make me lose my mind?
