Weezer played a three-show tour in northern California in August of 1992. It was the band's first time performing outside of Los Angeles.

Overview

Background

Weezer performed repeatedly in the same five Sunset Strip rock clubs for their first six months as a band. Though these shows introduced them to like-minded groups like Wax[1] - as well as future fan club founders Mykel and Carli Allan[2] - the band struggled to gain much of a following. In a 1995 interview with the LA Times, founding bassist Matt Sharp described their early audiences as “the same five to 10 friends who would show up because they felt guilty."

Jason's previous band, The Brotherhood Groove Grand Junction, was playing an outdoor party up in Gureneville, CA on the 16th and had invited Jason to bring his "new band" up to play. Weezer decided to try and fit some other shows in to make the trek north more worth it. They scored a gig at Marsuggi's, a smallish bar/live entertainment place in San Jose. They also had a gig lined up in Eureka CA, on the 15th, and then the party show on the 16th. The 14th was left up to chance.

[I] drove the band and the gear in [my] Bronco II with a U-Haul trailer. The only thing was there were no enclosed trailers available, so the band was forced to rent what became known as the hooptie ride, an open trailer on which they stretched a blue tarp over the gear. This made it impossible to leave the truck anywhere without bringing the gear along.

Non-performance day

Weezer arrived in Berkeley, CA on August 14 without a gig scheduled, and, in Koch's words, proceeded to "just show up at bay area clubs until they got added to a show."[3] They tried asking for stage time at three distinct clubs - including "Gilman," the venue that helped launch Green Day, The Offspring, Rancid, and other bands - but they were turned away each time. Koch recorded parts of the evening, including a full-band acapella take of "Please Sweet Peepers", a Rivers Cuomo demo which would not see release until November of 2020 as part of Alone IV: The Blue-Pinkerton Years. An improvised song named "Symphony of Sludge" was also recorded, later that night at Jason Cropper's mother's house. It featured Cuomo on flute and Cropper "and others" on piano.[3]

Video

A performance of "My Name is Jonas," filmed by Koch at the Guerneville show, was included on the Video Capture Device.

Some of the earliest known footage of the band in action. Rough around the edges, but at a backwoods hippie love fest part in Guerneville, CA, who cared? Mixed in is some footage from a show the day before in Eureka.
