Appearances

Overview

"Get Off on the Pain" was previously in contention for SZNZ: Spring.[1] Weezer shared a short snippet of the song on September 14, 2022 on various social media platforms. Rivers also shared another snippet as a solution for his web game, Weezle, on September 18.

The lyric "Kyrie eleison" is a Greek phrase which translates to "Lord have mercy." The song's bridge contains an excerpt from the poem, "I Look Into My Glass" by Thomas Hardy.[2]

A demo of "Get Off on the Pain" was leaked online in December of 2022.

Album version

The people down the street are packing up (Pack it up!)
As if they found a neighbour doing witchcraft
There isn't anybody I could trust
So I'm alone, dancing to a click track

What's wrong with me? I count to three
I screwed it up to the Judas Tree
I bow my head, I turned my eyes
I ran away right by your side

I tried to make it better
One candle in the rain
But there's no way around it
Now I get off on the pain
I get off on the pain, I get off on the pain
I get off on the pain, I get off on the pain
Kyrie eleison
Lord, have mercy on my soul

Now I wonder if a man could fly
With all his sins suspended from his body
Each of us was born to live and die (why?)
But I could never follow orthodoxy

What's wrong with me? I count to three
I screwed it up to the Judas Tree
I bow my head, I turned my eyes
I ran away right by your side

I tried to make it better
One candle in the rain
But there's no way around it
Now I get off on the pain
I get off on the pain, I get off on the pain
I get off on the pain, I get off on the pain
Kyrie eleison
Lord, have mercy on my soul

I look into my glass,
And view my wasting skin
And say, "Would God it came to pass
My heart had shrunk as thin!"
For then, I, undistrest
By hearts grown cold to me
Could lonely wait my endless rest
With equanimity?

What's wrong with me? I count to three
I screwed it up to the Judas Tree
I bow my head, I turned my eyes
I ran away right by your side

I tried to make it better
One candle in the rain
But there's no way around it
Now I get off on the pain, I get off on the pain
I get off on the pain, I get off on the pain
It's in my DNA
Lord, have mercy on my soul

Demo lyrics

The people down the street are moving out
As if they found a neighbour doing witchcraft
The leaves are swirling all over the ground (ground, ground)
And I'm alone, dancing to a click track

What's wrong with me? I count to three
I screwed it up to a Judas tree
I bow my head, I turned my eyes
I ran away right by her side

I tried to make it better
One candle in the rain
But there's no way around it
I get off on the pain
I get off on the pain, I get off on the pain
No, there's no way around it
I get off on the pain

And now I wonder if a soul can fly
Across the room without hitting the ceiling fan
Each of us was born to live and die
As if we're each a little Jesus man

What's wrong with me? I count to three
I screwed it up to a Judas tree
I bow my head, I turned my eyes
I ran away right by her side

I tried to make it better
One candle in the rain
But there's no way around it
I get off on the pain
I get off on the pain, I get off on the pain
No, there's no way around it
I get off on the pain

I look into my glass,
And view my wasting skin
And say, "Would God it came to pass
My heart had shrunk as thin!"
For then, I, undistrest
By hearts grown cold to me
Could lonely wait my endless rest
With equanimity?

What's wrong with me? I count to three
I screwed it up to a Judas Tree
I bow my head, I turned my eyes
I ran away right by her side

I tried to make it better
One candle in the rain
But there's no way around it
Now I get off on the pain, I get off on the pain
No, there's no way around it
Now I get off on the pain
