Weezer in 1992

February 15, 1992 - Weezer rehearse together for the first time

On February 15, 1992, Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Jason Cropper, and Matt Sharp got together at T.K. Rehearsal Studios in Los Angeles, California, and rehearsed for 2 to 3 days. On the second or third day, someone rolled tape.

At the time of this rehearsal, Weezer wasn't named yet. On the original tape, the following band names were all crammed on the label, a joke on how no one could decide on the name for the band yet. Some were old names, such as "Fuzz," but there were also names such as "Meathead", "Outhouse", and "Hummingbird," and some other names being thrown around were "the Big Jones," "This Niblet," and "The Leafy Green Reefer Machine".

March 19, 1992 - Weezer's first concert

Weezer's first concert took place on March 19, 1992 at Raji's in Los Angeles, CA, later made famous from the cover art of the 7-inch single of "Sliver" by Nirvana. The show happened quite suddenly, after Weezer got offered an opening slot for Dogstar. Apparently, there was no show booked that night at all, and when Dogstar asked to play, there was a need for opening acts to "try and beef up the draw" earlier on in the night. Meanwhile, the as-yet-unnamed Weezer was itching to start playing out, and started calling around that day to try and book some gigs. The guy at Raji's said "how about tonight?", and so it was. They only needed to come up with a band name at this point, and a major brainstorming session ensued. In the end, Rivers Cuomo stuck with his "Weezer" suggestion, and everyone else couldn't quite come up with something that sounded more distinctive. The band called everyone they knew, and got 17 people to show up and watch.

The other significant event that day was the moving in of Cuomo, Matt Sharp, and their friend Justin Fisher to the "Amherst House" in West L.A. This is the site of "the" garage, where frequent Weezer rehearsals and recording would take place, and eventually the "Say It Ain't So" video would be filmed there.

This show was not recorded, although the following five tracks are known to have been performed. As this was Weezer's first show, all performances are live debuts.

"Martha" is the first recording of what would become Southern Fried Swing, featuring Pat Wilson and Karl Koch on vocals, with Pat also playing acoustic guitar. Over the course of 1992-1997, about 50-60 tapes were made, mostly done while on the road with Weezer, in hotel rooms and on the bus. Most songs centered around very low-quality beginners' keyboards, found at Salvation Armys and RadioShacks.

Genre Alternative rock
Label Self-released

Weezer's first demo was recorded in May of 1992. It was recorded in the garage of 2226 Amherst Ave. on an 8-track belonging to Rivers Cuomo. Around 10 copies of the demo were made on whatever blank cassettes the band had, however only one reached the owner of the English Acid which was able to help secure a show at the club. The demo was considered problematic from the get-go and plans were set to record a better demo or even an independent album as soon as possible.

The Kitchen Tape is the name of Weezer's second demo tape. It was recorded in an attempt to create a "serious" demo to hand around local clubs in attempts to generate "a buzz." The demo was mostly recorded beginning August 1, 1992 at the band's rehearsal space in the garage at 2226 Amherst Avenue. Initially labeled Weezer's First Ablum during the recording process, the title The Kitchen Tape was later adopted as the drums were recorded in the house's kitchen. The band recorded using Rivers Cuomo's 8-track tape recorder. The songs "Thief, You've Taken All That Was Me", "Let's Sew Our Pants Together" and "The World Has Turned and Left Me Here" originate from the band's first demo, recorded a few months prior, and were simply added to the tape. About 12 copies of the demo were produced in total.
